Credit card minimum payments are designed to keep your account in good standing, not to pay off your debt quickly. Because the minimum shrinks as your balance shrinks, paying only the minimum can stretch a few thousand dollars of debt over more than a decade. This calculator shows the true time and interest cost — and how much a fixed payment changes it.

How this calculator works

Each month, interest is charged at your APR divided by 12 on the current balance. The minimum payment is calculated the way many US issuers do it: a percentage of the balance plus that month's interest, or a dollar floor (often $25–$40), whichever is higher.

The payment reduces the balance, the next month's minimum is recalculated on the lower balance, and the process repeats until the card is paid off.

For comparison, the calculator also runs the same balance with a fixed monthly payment that does not shrink. Keeping your payment steady is one of the simplest ways to escape card debt faster.

The formula

Minimum = max(Floor, B × p + B × APR ÷ 12)
B
current balance
p
minimum percentage of balance
APR ÷ 12
monthly periodic rate
Floor
lowest dollar minimum the issuer allows

Worked example

A $6,000 balance at 22.9% APR has a monthly rate of about 1.91%. The first month's interest is $6,000 × 0.0191 ≈ $115, and 1% of the balance is $60, so the first minimum is about $175.

As the balance falls, so does the minimum. Paying only the minimum takes well over 15 years and costs thousands more in interest than the original balance.

Paying a fixed $250 every month instead clears the debt in under three years with a fraction of the interest. Your monthly statement includes a similar 'minimum payment warning' box required by the CARD Act of 2009.

Tips

  • Set an automatic payment for a fixed amount above the minimum.
  • Look for a 0% intro APR balance transfer — but factor in the transfer fee, typically 3%–5%.
  • Call your issuer and ask for a lower APR; it works more often than you would think.

Frequently asked questions

How is a credit card minimum payment calculated?

Most issuers use either a flat percentage of the balance (often 2%–3%) or 1% of the balance plus interest and fees, with a dollar minimum such as $25 or $35. Your cardholder agreement lists the exact formula.

Does paying the minimum hurt my credit score?

Paying on time protects your payment history, but carrying a high balance keeps your credit utilization high, which can lower your score. Paying more than the minimum reduces utilization faster.

Why does paying the minimum take so long?

Most of a minimum payment goes to interest, and because the minimum falls as the balance falls, principal reduction slows down over time.

What happens if I pay less than the minimum?

You will likely be charged a late fee, may lose any promotional rate, and a payment 30 or more days late can be reported to the credit bureaus.
